The magnificence of the Italian grape growing region of Montalcino, a medieval, hill-town located in Tuscany, is captured with perfection at the estate of Casanova Di Neri. Considered one of the top producers of Brunello di Montalcino, the altitude and climate of the region has provided an area where Sangiovese ripens more fully and consistently than anywhere else in Tuscany. These factors contribute to the body, color, extract and tannins commonly associated with this type of wine. Brunello is often compared with the Pinot Noir wines of Burgundy with its smooth tannins and ripe, fruit driven character. Casanova di Neri’s Brunello production is divided between three different labels in order to best represent the estate’s unique characteristics – White Label, Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto. Winemaker Giacomo Neri and consultant Carlo Ferrini are constantly looking for ways to improve their vineyards and winemaking. The secret to the quality of the Brunello of Montalcino is treasured in the grapevine: a meticulous labor by hand, from dry pruning to the selection of the most fit offshoots, from the containment of the vegetation to the trimming of the bunches, processes that all share the goal of reaping and selecting the best fruits. Certain winemakers within this region carry out a second selection at harvest, so that only perfect grapes are sent away to the wine cellar. The 2007 White Label is a brilliant expression of the estates’ terroir with good structure, soft oak and an overall taste comparable to the magnitude of a Boccelli operata. In the words of The Wine Advocate’s esteemed critic Robert Parker, “The 2007 is one of the best and most complete vintages I can remember tasting in some time. Most importantly of all, though, it is flat-out delicious!” Tasting like a heavenly “parfait” of blackberry pie, strawberry jam, vanilla bean and pastry cream, this brilliant Brunello is nothing short of an Italian masterpiece. –RMH
