To some, May 1st is better recognized as “May Day”. To wine lovers, however, May 1st is recognized as a day that kicks off the month long celebration honoring Oregon’s legendary 3 billion dollar industry: WINE. To some, Hawaii is considered “paradise”. To wine lovers, however, “paradise” is found in the rich soil and vines of Oregon’s famed pinot noir grapes (Pinot Paradise). As passionate wine lovers and firm believers of the importance of supporting your local wineries, we leave the world behind and head off towards the lush green lands of Oregon’s famous Williamette Valley. An extraordinary wine producing region, the wineries of the Williamette Valley continue to gain accolades among international wine critics, proving brilliant domestic wines do not always come from California. With over 450 wineries successfully producing 72 different varieties of grapes as well as hundreds of restaurants showcasing the culinary genius of master chefs, the Williamette Valley remains an energetic wine destination. As we blaze the mighty Oregon Wine Trail to the beat of buds breaking, let us all raise our glasses and salute our friends of Oregon!
We are eager to visit as many wineries as possible while tasting a variety of different vintages but our list of “must-tastes” include: Argyle, Erath, Elk Cove, Clos Du Bois, Domain Serene, Lange, Adelsheim, Sokol Blosser, Williamette Valley Wines, Le Cadeau, Evening Land, Penner-Ash, Archery Summit, Beaux Freres, King Estate, Ayoub, Alexana and Bethel Heights. In honor of wine month, most wineries are giving away backpacks full of amazing Oregon wine goodies. Each backpack will be stuffed with: two wine glasses with the Oregon Wine logo, an Oregon Wine Month growler/water bottle, an Oregon Wine Month t-shirt, a gift certificate to a restaurant and one in five backpacks will have two tickets to the International Pinot Noir Celebration Sunday Walkabout (a $250 value!). To get one of these amazing backpacks, all you have to say at a tasting is, “I love Oregon Wine,” and you WIN! It’s that easy. Even more exciting, this past March the Oregon Senate voted unanimously to let wineries, restaurants and grocery stores dispense wine in growlers! With that being said, we feel like a bunch of bursting grapes in the crusher. The excitement level is through the roof and the official countdown has begun. We look forward to making new friends and toasting to good health with other fellow wine lovers in the beautiful state of Oregon. –RMH
